Honing a creative voice is a difficult thing to achieve for most, but for others it seems to come as a reflex. It also seems to help when you’ve got something to say, and that’s where Reinaldo Green comes in. He’s a director who’s primed to remove ‘up-and-coming’ from his title because he’s making statements in the industry through his films. Here's a preview into the work he shared as one of our keynote speakers for the 2017 Film + Music Conference.
Reinaldo’s work is at once timeless and timely, capturing moments from modern society and translating them into stories that we all can connect with. They don’t preach and they don’t spoon feed, but they do hold up a mirror to our state as a society.
See his 2015 short film STOP, for example. This slice of life piece is a gripping, not-so-subtle take on what being a black American is truly like for many in our country. There are no surprises, no twists or turns, just an unflinching glimpse on realities. STOP garnered the attention of outlets like Vogue, VICE, Adweek, IndieWire, and many more.
Reinaldo’s voice in film is undeniable, which assuredly led to him working on his first feature film Monsters and Men, which is being backed by the Tribeca Film Institute and is slated for a release in the second half of 2017. But his distinct voice translates to a smaller scale as well. The short Mother Nature: Not Mommy, which premiered on NOWNESS, is a sweetly simple, yet fundamentally important look at being both a filmmaker and a father.
Like his previous films, Reinaldo isn't heavy handed. He presents a reality and lets viewers take from it what they will. It’s a simple, beautiful tactic in filmmaking that’s not easy to pull off.
